Senator demands answers as national park boss orders U.S. flag removal


The crew working on a 475-foot-long bridge in Alaska’s Denali National Park was recently told that they could no longer fly the American flag from their trucks or heavy equipment, which are being used in the $207 million Federal Highway Administration project.

The bridge is being built by Granite Construction, after a 2021 rockslide took out a portion of the popular Denali Park Road that is used by visitors and tour buses to access more remote areas of the national park.

Since 2023, construction has been underway to repair the road at mile 45. This spring two mobile trucks and one piece of heavy equipment had been flying standard-sized U.S. flags.

One of the contractors working on the bridge reached out to the Alaska Watchman regarding the recent order that the flags be removed. He asked that his name not be used, given that he is actively working on the project.

According to the contractor, Denali National Park Superintendent Brooke Merrell contacted the man overseeing the federal highways project, claiming there had been complaints about the U.S. flags, and notifying him that bridge workers must stop flying the stars and strips from their vehicles because it detracts from the “park experience.”

“The trucks are flying these American flags, about a foot atop the trucks, about three-foot by four-foot flags, and they said they don’t want this,” the contractor explained. “They’re saying it isn’t conducive and it doesn’t fit the park experience.”

How does someone this ridiculous make it to superintendent at a US National Park?

This woman should be fired immediately.

Senator Dan Sullivan (R-AK) wrote a strongly worded letter to the National Park Service demanding answers.

The construction company at the heart of a dispute over the removal of an American flag from one of its vehicles in Denali National Park and Preserve says workers removed the flag in response to a visitor complaint over road noise.

A statement released Wednesday by the Federal Highway Administration, which is overseeing construction of a Denali Park Road bridge spanning a landslide at Polychrome Pass, says the National Park Service relayed a visitor complaint about the noise a bridge worker’s vehicle-mounted flag was making while travelling the Park Road. It says the agency’s goal is to minimize impacts and noise for visitors and wildlife as much as possible, and that bridge contractor Granite Construction was notified.

A statement from a Granite spokesperson confirms the FHWA asked the company to remove the vehicle’s flag on May 16. It notes that one of the bridge project’s goals is to “preserve the park’s natural elements and maintain park visitors’ experience by keeping a low profile as we go about our work.”

The removal of the flag, which U.S. Sen. Dan Sullivan said in a letter to Park Service Director Charles F. Sams III had been caused by “someone at the National Park Service,” ignited a firestorm on social media over the Memorial Day weekend, with a denial of that claim posted by park staff on Facebook drawing more than 700 comments. It also inspired people to drive a convoy of vehicles displaying American flags from Fairbanks and other locations into the park in protest Sunday.

Sullivan’s letter also asked Sams for an explanation of what happened, and urged him to take steps to ensure a similar incident won’t happen again in a national park.

I know many are upset, but, the ones who arent talking are already going to vote for Trump into office. I hope that many on the left, especially the Libertarians, realize how screwed up and vicious the left is. They dont care about anything but power.

I've said back before Trump's first term that on day one that he should fire the top 5% of every federal agency and have the middle 10% investigate them. If they are legit good guys, then they can have their jobs back.

And when that is done, reduce staffing by 5% each year for the next four years, I guarantee you there will not be a drop in level of performance, as they do nothing anyway.
