I did this work for the last 15 years after retiring from the Federal government.

A Computer Science degree with a focus on cyber-security is one path, certifications can be accrued instead of or in addition to a technical degree as well. CISP CISA CISSP are some examples. She needs to keep her background SCUPULOUSLY clean, because such positions generally require a clearance at some level.

Much of modern cybersecurity is "eyes on glass" sitting in front of a screen and gov't/companies may prefer human beings right on the property, so working from home will vary widely with the employer and environment. When I was Deputy CIO of the Securities & Exchange Commission my cybersecurity "guys" were two floors down in the basement - full time.

Cybersecurity forensic work is one area where there might be a "work from home" component.

Thnx,
There are plenty of jobs like that. Full stack web developer is a big one. YouTuber is another. No need to limit herself prematurely.

At one point I had between 35-50 web developers working for me, but only two cybersecurity guys. Those 2 made 30% more than the developers and didn't have to deal with changing requirements by @hole customers, delivery deadlines, obscene amounts of stress. Cybersecurity is prescriptive - the rules, requirements and best practices are well known.

"Youtuber" is not a job....its hoping you can get enough yokels to "like" you enough to subscribe. Its "OnlyFans" without the booty.

It's definitely a big money profession, that's for sure. If they don't want to pay for the college, the military is definitely the way to go to get the clearance taken care of (and get experience under your belt). Military also helps build your "network." I know I would've never gotten my current job had I not been on the "inside" when it posted. Most military that work cyber-ops only last 4-6 years (one enlistment) and then go do contract or GS work for 10-15X the pay. I know SEVERAL companies starting entry level cyber security folks in the 125-130K /year range. This is so extreme that the Air Force just brought back Warrant Officers, but ONLY for cyber folks. The demand for them is that high. It is the career path that will always be needed in the future. Cyber security will NEVER go away. She definitely could've picked worse, that's for sure.

When I was struggling to get cybersecurity folks for Y2K work back in the day in Wash DC snot-nosed kids straight out of college with the right credentials could walk into a 6-digit job if they could meet the security clearance requirements. Pretty much the same with sh!t-hot network administrators. Programmers were pretty abundant and not that hard to corral...

Enterprise Architects were the worst, mostly theorists whose work never really got completed and by the time they got large enterprises documented, the technology changed and often the agency mission and so they got to start over. All their reams of documents became useless "shelf-ware".

Funny, story - my SEC security guys (Joe and Hank) caught some "script kiddie" in a Berkley computer lab probing our systems repeatedly. Before the kid could leave the lab he got visited by some guys from a 3 letter agency in dark suits. Turned out he was trying to show some other dweeb how easy it is to hack gov't systems. He picked the wrong agency.

His mother actually called to apologize to my CIO.

The hacker crap in the movies is laughable....
