Glad I prefer Ralph Lauren opposed to Izod.
At least you weren't making fun of me

What you should do is start posting the popcorn emoji every time Bill posts something political. Raccoon boy does that at the other forum and is extremely highly thought of as a result.

Unlikely that it will "go away".

Their goal seems to be to purge the posters, to somewhat morph the sub forum into the NEW Age. A direct difference in beliefs with the aged conservative (being used only to describe, wanting no change) and the young minds moving forward.

They are thinking about and creating a new future the site. All fine by me really, it's their site their rules (if you can deal with the Ex post facto), like it or not. Your choice.

So ,OP you going to continue to play the middle, or pick one forum you feel more connected to?

There's no better feeling in the world than being independent. If the farm really is your forever home, you should really consider wiring in a fused disconnect and manual transfer switch now so adding solar later would be a walk in the park.

I’m installing a whole house generator fueled with LP gas. I may consider a small solar field at some point. Currently the numbers don’t pencil. But I like the idea of having solar fueled battery packs as a redundant source of power.

I’m also installing a diesel tank to fuel the pickup and tractor and other equipment.
And although I have muni water, I’ll be drilling a well as backup. I may also use the well for landscape and agriculture irrigation around the property.

It ain’t going away. They just want it as vanilla / pc as possible now. No arguing. Nothing remotely offensive to anyone possible. 50% of the posts there are completely bland discussions by 89x. If you want to discuss anything controversial whatsoever it appears PRC is the place. Whatever……

My 2nd wife and I were easing into "homesteading" back in the '70s -- before the phrase "subsistence farm" or the latest one, "prepper," was invented. We were not waiting for "the big snap," we wanted to live like that full-time regardless of what was going on in the world.

It's why I learned how to butcher and process hogs. We had chickens, big garden, etc. No modern tech to replace electric power or anything was available back then.

So she started banging the neighbors while I was working, we broke up and that ended the homesteading (she was a true alcoholic). We remained distant friends and she died in 2003.

I don't think Cuckland is going away.

At least not any time soon.

On the other hand, this place seems to be growing and getting stronger, which is good to see.

A LP generator doesn't really classify as prepper since you have a limited fuel supply. Solar or wind + battery is much more prepper. That said I, don't have solar but do have a 24kW LP generator with a 500 gallon tank which will last a couple weeks, maybe a little more depending on the season. The generator is only an inconvenience avoidance tool. I would be interested to compare solar with battery system to a generator. 2-3x the cost might be worth it for an infinite supply if I was concerned that I might need that.

A well backed up with a generator suffers the same problem if it is your backup supply, although I like a well for irrigation. Rainwater collection + storage is prepper territory and could probably be done in Florida with less storage than I need in Central Texas. You probably have enough roof area with your pole barn + house Rainwater collection is my sole water supply, although I didn't do it for prepper reasons. RW still needs electricity for the pump and disinfection system.

You're the only one taking umbrage here. And the only one crying about it. How about not reading his threads? That way you wouldn't be upset at Bill, and all of the rest of us wouldn't be upset at YOU.

Larry, a powered well pump is convenient but it does require power.

How about a second (backup) well that has a hand pump attached? Think Helen Keller-style. The number of spare parts you would need to keep is really very minimal, and you’ll always have a supply of fresh water on hand (pun intended).

Agree.
I understand that I will be at the mercy of a full LP tank. But I'm also not a super prepper. More for old age protection and convenience.
Solar sounds nice in theory but as posted the numbers don't work well but at some point I may damn the numbers and go with it.

A large generator is about 10 grand all in with transfer switch etc.
A solar field is 40 grand and that does not include battery storage equipment.
I can buy a lot of Lady Propane for 40+ grand. Assuming of course it is available.
