Pinto, Maverick, Vega, anything by Dodge or Chrysler. What a crappy decade of cars.

The crappiest one I had was a '81 Ford Escort hatchback. I had just gotten married and needed a second car so Baby Doll could get to school, and me to work.

Never did but had a couple of friends that did. They didn’t seem to be that bad or unreliable, except like most cars of the era they rusted in Michigan.

No chevette, but I had an 85 Escort. It was 100% better then my buddy's Pacer.

Pinto, Vega, Datsun B210 but no Chevette. Dated a chick with one, that was bad enough.

I hate to admit it but my little brother bought a Yugo new. It was the worst built car and literally started falling apart after the first winter. He dumped it on another sucker after 2 or 3 years. Then he started driving a Pinto and it was like moving up to a Cadillac.

Learned how to drive a stick in a Chevette. Friend in college had a purple AMC Gremlin, and another friend's family had a Maverick.
The friend with the Maverick in the family had a Datsun 280z, and her mom had a 260z, so at least there were some cool cars of the time. |

Dodge Duster. Plymouth Aspen. Both were very good cars - had the sweet ass sweet slant 6 - absolute BEAUTY of an engine - smooth as glass! I had a Plymouth Caravelle as my first car. Full size Chyrsler with the slant 6! Power brakes!!!! Power steering!!!!! YES!!!! My father drove a Vega from 1974 to 1994 as his daily beater. The engine blew up 4 times! No joke. 4 times! I'd say he blew it up..... but I can't put that on him as he was simply driving it at around the speed limit. I blew it up once. My buddy was driving his 87 Honda Civic to our house, I was following in the Vega - he was doing 70 mph. I had the throttle WIDE OPEN! BOOM! LOL. What a ****ing piece of shit! My grandmother had a chevette. It was actually quite a reliable little shitbox. Never gave any trouble - she put about 60K miles on it and traded it in - no issues at all. Vastly superior to the Vega. I put 200K miles on the Slant 6, then the Vega was ready for the funeral home, so my father put another 100K miles on the Caravelle, and the seat rusted THROUGH the floor of the unibody. He braced it up, put another 50K miles on it, then drove it to the junkyard, engine still purring like brand new. Those slant 6s were such wonderful machines. |

BIL owned a "Shove-it" - it wouldn't start one morning and I laid under the front end and shorted across the starter to get it going; he was shocked...the starter is literally right behind the front bumper... POS, you'd have to paint it to junk it.

My best friend's dad had a mid 60's VW bug. Not a shitbox since they were reliable as hell. But he was 6'-8 or so, a fireman and a big strong guy. He had to take out the back seat and mount the driver's seat further back. It was really funny to see him get in or out of it.

My Mom had one. 4 speed car. We drove the shit out of it. For whatever reason Chevettes got a bad rep. Ours went though both my older brother and I learning how to drive a stick. It had well over 150,000 miles on it when my Dad sold it. Never once broke down. Same with my Fiero. I ran the shit out of that car and it had 147,000 trouble free miles on it when I sold that. No, it never caught fire. Both had the Iron Duke engine. Bulletproof.
After the Chevette my Mom drove a 4 speed V8 Monza . What a fun car that was for two teenaged drivers. |

Mom had a poop brown chevette in 82-83. Got rid of that pile for a Corolla in 84.
