Nearest railroad that comes to mind is about 40 miles.

Occasionally hear a distant train horn and enjoy its long, mellow note. Also kinda miss the ringing church bells. We used to hear them all the time, but not any more. Many churches in the area are closed now.

The Florida Gulf and Atlantic goes through town. I never had a rail line nearby until we moved here to Mayberry a couple of years ago.
Usually goes through here in the evening (just did) and I kinda like it. Not too close that it rattles the windows but close enough to hear it.

Back in Canada in the 50's we could hear that mournful wail
of steam engines with their steam whistles late at night.
Made me squirm deeper under the covers. Thoughts of
a Banshee flying toward our house!

Before we sold our home and moved into our beach house we could hear the train home faintly which was a nice sound. Now living on a barrier island on the beach all I hear at night is the ocean....a wonderful sound until it get angry. We are very fortunate indeed.

Yep no train when we lived at the beach. And we won’t have it when we move out to the farmhouse. I actually might miss it.

I've never heard train horns where I have lived. Ever. When I hear them when travelling, its a cool sound! I miss the sound of freedom from when I stayed in Va Beach - that was really freaking cool!

I wonder how many railroad cars are graffiti-ed? From my observation the large majority of them are.

Other than a few switch tracks that I may have heard, all of them were over 15 miles. So only if the wind was blowing straight in would you ever hear even a faint whistle; no track noise.

I've lived in suburbs where they have all the noise downtown, but not out on the prairie where the sound travels for 40 miles. In the mountains now. Trains do not like them.

Lived 4 houses from an active train track crossing and the horns would blow nightly - after about two weeks I and the wife slept right through it.

Never lived close enough to hear trains. Where I do live now, especially on a cold winter night, You can occasionally here the sirens for 4 different volunteer fire and ambulance squads going off. Its so quite and the sounds bounce off the mountains.

Every district has their own distinct sounds. I can hear our squad easy, the others its quit low. Its nothing that will wake you up but if your awake you can hear them.

All of them. Graffiti has been around since a cro-magnon drew a deer on a cave wall. Some of the “artists” are very talented.
