Columbia House Records is how I discovered the under appreciated artistic magnificence that is "Debbie Gibson.

If you forget to mail that damn card in, you get what you get and your stuck with it.

I got stuck with an Alannah Myles CD. I tried to sell it out at the used record stores in East Lansing and just got laughed at. One guy told me I was about the tenth person the CD club had dropped that turd on.

Yes. As a teenager I built a small library of "Classics Illustrated" comic books, which contained illustrated cartoon stories of classic novels by people like Charles Dickens, Shakespeare, Jules Verne, Jack London etc.

In the back cover was an illustrated list of other titles which induced me into buying others.

I still have my original 1954 Classics Illustrated "War of the Worlds".
I read it so much that my dad bought me a 2d copy in case I wore it out.
Gave one to my brother.

Great story!!

Great series. The newsagent (news store?) where I did my paper round always had a selection of them in its magazine shelves, and I'd often pick up a new one when I got paid on a Saturday. Others you could get by mail order.

Today? Too intelligent for the dumbed down world we have, and they've died out from news & magazine racks everywhere. However they are still available from the company's website.

I recently picked up Shakespeare's "Hamlet" and "Macbeth", as I imagined I could educate myself a bit. But I gave up! The text is straight from the original author of course, no compromise - so I gave them to the son of a friend who's studying Macbeth for his final high school exam.

BTW part of your avatar is the Canada flag associated with Canada as part of the Normandy landings, and WW2 generally - has Canada sneaked its way down to Seattle? I know it's not far as I drove down from Vancouver myself once.

Oh gosh, this brings back memories...

I ordered an egg incubator and it looked like the picture below but it didn't come with any quail eggs, so my dad and I went to the hardware store where they sold everything including fertile eggs and we bought 2 or 3. I think they just cooked in the little plastic enclosure, boy was I disappointed and mad that I wasted my money!

Oh well, what would you’ve done with the quail if they hatched?

I are a LEGAL immigrant. Emigrated from Ontario to SoCal then up to Seattle.
I miss the real Canada under the Red Ensign, not the present Kommie Kanada under

I always wanted to order several things out of the back of those comic books, but my father never would allow me to do it. Every time I brought the comic book to him and pointed at something I wanted to buy. He would just tell me repeatedly that they were not going to be as advertised and that they were just a bunch of ripoff artists. He was probably right… well, definitely right, for sure. Oh, well, I guess I did learn the lesson without having to do it the hard way so my father did his job lol.

My oldest sister got married in 1960; I had just turned 10. I bought an "Exhaust whistle" off a comic book, it was maybe 50¢ that you put in the end of the tailpipe.

My new BIL had a red '56 Mercury and a family friend, an older guy, helped me put the whistle in and put stones in the hubcaps.

Needless to say, when sis and BIL took off from our house after the reception you couldn't even hear the whistle -- so I got ****ed out of 50¢.

I also bought a Jewish-Jitsu book, I think it was maybe a buck. I learned how to "box" somebody's ears, so I tried on my other sister when she was sitting in a chair reading.

It hurt her, but not permanently and our mom got pissed at me. Another buck down the drain, so no more comic back-cover purchases.

Obviously from some of the replies here, the scammer who sold the specs had sized up pretty well the innate horniness of the typical youth and capitalized on it.
