Do all of the Water Pump bolts on a SBC go into the Water Jacket? Just curious what kind of sealant I need for the bolts. Can't really find a definitive answer on the net with some basic searches.

Did the old bolts have sealant on them? I know when I did the water pump on my 4.3 I didn't use any thread sealant.If you want peace of mind a light skimming of rtv won't hurt.

Loc-tite makes a hydraulic sealant. I forget the number on it. Look on their site it should pop right up in a search. :cert:

Coat the threads with RTV Black, by Permatex I do this with ALL engine bolts, except maybe bellhousing... I figger they ALL go into the water jacket, and so hell with it, just do them ALL and be happy about it.....for one thing, when you torque that bitch down, you know you got full affect from your efforts, not fighting some stupid friction from threads....

It's the mechanical equivalent of some sex lube.....:rofl::cert:

I'm having trouble with this new Edelbrock water pump I overpaid for. Boss on the casting won't allow the install of my AC bracket. I called Edelbrock about it, and they said it's the first they have heard of such a thing. :(

There are quite a few threads on the net about it, so I'm not alone.

Also bought a cheap Reman "Masterpro" pump from O, O, O, O'Reilly. Bracket fits just fine, but the distance from the nose of the pump to the pulley face is 1/4 inch longer than my original pump...even though both have a 3/4 shaft.

This is ****ing stupid.

Yeah that.. and the bolts will back out easier the next time needed...

But the gasket itself should seal it from any leaks, except the bolt itself.. :island14:

Well, kinda like any of them water passage bolts on any SBC or for that matter on ANY GM engine, gotta slather them pretty good when installing or they will weep up the bolt and leak into the bolt valley and look stupid there, wether it's oil or water.....PIA....:issues:

Yeh, you ain't kidding, I have heard of 3? different water pump offsets/depths/drives/spacing to do with various cars, like the L98 vette version would not fit ALL cars much less simpler in the V belt early stuff......

they think I believe for a second that the close in vette drives will not fit in any pickup they made??? much less another CAR??? bullshit, willing to bet on it.....then they wonder why they went UNDER????

Here they were, making 5? different engines, one for each division....and swap/sharing for decades Chebby/GMC/Caddy/Olds/Poncho/Buick..... and so it was easy, but TODAY??? hell no....

simple A body...Poncho made it work, Chebby made both the SB and BB work, so did Buick/Olds....

WTF is so difficult today??:issues::issues:

I've been changing water pumps for years on SBC and all I do is make sure the gaskets are glued (contact cement) to the pump first, and siliconed (permatex) to the block when you install it. Nothing on the bolts. Never had a leak.
If you really want to check, stick a coat hanger with a tiny hook on the end of it into the hole....if it hooks on the block at the bottom of the thread, it's a water jacket. If it's just a hole it ain't! :seasix:
