View Full Version : Harrington's for Christmas

For those of you who enjoy eating till you purge at Christmas, I will make a recommendation of a Spiral Sliced Maple Glazed Ham and 2 jars of their Raisin Sauce for dipping. Followed by :datawiz: of course.

I heat the ham in the oven till it's about 120 internal and serve. They say serve cold, I like it better above room temp. I can't live without the Raisin Sauce and I have never figured out how to replicate it at home. Ruined a trainload of raisins trying though.

I could swing the raisin sauce if I absolutely had to. But I definitely couldn't afford the ham to go with it......

I call BS on Spaz spending $90 on a ham. He might spend that for all meals for a month, but not for a ham.

Virtually the same price as a Honey Baked Ham for the same amount of meat.

he is but he definitely has relaxed it with all the overtime I've been working. I've also been saving 2.7 cents per night by turning off the kitchen lights before I go to bed. :D

I would give the hams and turkey credit for being the best I've ever had. Many of the other items, not so much. They're more processed food. if you like smoked turkey breast they have the very best there ever was.

If you have a Wegmans nearby, get a celebration ham. They only come out at Christmas/New Years and Easter. Best you’ll ever have.

Spiral cut hams are too dry IMO.

Hey Mark!

I do have a Wegmans nearby but I'm going to disagree with you on this one. At least in the context of having it as a snack ham. these are for munching on as an hors d'oeuvre and to that end they are the bee's knees.

My dad sends me a spiral sliced city ham and a smoked turkey every Christmas from Burgers Smokehouse (https://www.smokehouse.com/), which is located in Jefferson City, MO where he lives. We made smoked turkey and bacon sandwiches last night as a matter of fact. I think the smoked turkey is best served cold. The city ham is excellent and you get a lot.

You may have noticed, but I'm a cheap bastard right up till it involves something I like. Then, I tend to spend a little more for better quality.

Having had both, I can say those are ok, they're good, but there's no comparison to the bone-in spiral sliced hams. Before I'd go there, I'd take Garf up on the Wegmans suggestion and pick up a ham there.

DixieVet, btdt, and there's something to be said about smoking and prepping your own. It's not an option for me any more, well, not realistically anyway. I choose these because they're excellent and convenient (though not particularly cheap). I bet if you charged for your time and care, you'd find yours would price right up with these, if not surpass.

You're still welcome to PM your address and I'll see if I can stop in when they're ready. :D

This Saturday I am smoking six turkeys, two hams, three chubs of bologna, and four slabs of ribs.

For Thanksgiving I did the same turkey recipe (turkey cut into several pieces, seasoned, and cooked) one in the oven on Thanksgiving, then another that I smoked at a pretty good temp (like 375) the next morning for a Friendsgiving thing at a friend's parent's house. The hostess had a turkey she made, and I almost felt guilty because the crowd devoured my smoked turkey before they even touched her dried-out, bland, anemic-looking turkey mess. Having done the turkeys in pieces, I must say I'll never go back to a whole one unless someone asks me to. It's so much easier to do it as two leg/thighs, a whole breast, and two wings. I used the back for making stock, along with some chicken wings. Since the breast is best cooked to 150-155 and the thigh/leg to 160-165 you literally can't beat that method, plus an overnight dry brine in the fridge will give you a very crisp skin that won't sog out as the turkey rests. Oh, and it cooks like twice to three times as fast as doing a whole one. I think my 13 lb turkeys each took about 70 minutes or so.

O/T: Is there a decent inexpensive smoker for occasional DIY'er? Maybe just one rack of ribs, chicken, etc..every now and then.
