That sounds interesting. Have you ever had an opportunity to implement your knowledge? :seasix:

Nah, unfortunately I never got the opportunity. I was married at the time and though my ex-wife apparently hated me, she also was insecure, needy and jealous and I couldn't deploy without causing a meltdown. Towards the end, at her insistence, I bought my practice, which then made me completely unable to walk away for any length of time without collapsing that too.

What kind of responsibilities did you have as a radio man in the Navy?

I ran teletype machines and relay stations at SACLANT (Supreme Allied Command Atlantic - NATO Headquarters) at Norfolk, VA. Spent four years of shore duty there during the Vietnam conflict and the only time I got out on the ocean was when a bunch of us went charter boat fishing.

Ask an Army veterinarian about the equines for the Old Guard. Or maybe don’t.

Navy doesn't use MOS. I was a Machinist Mate, one of four ratings eligible to attend Navy Nuclear Power School and be a nuke.

I considered joining Marines out of high school, as did not have funds to go to college.
Was a strong thought, as had five buddies that were going in.
Then I learned no drinking, no ass chasing, and all the other rules.

Needless to say they were better off without me.

Ever been to the Knolls or the Kesselring site!

Both in my sort of intimidate area. As a pipe fitter I made up a lot of stuff that went to those places!

US Army, one month and one day......August '66, Ft. Bragg, I think......

I tried to enlist in all 3 branches, Navy/AF rejected me on medical crap, Army surprisingly took me in.....they either goofed, OR needed me for the useless Vietnam crap.....

I have an extra vert in my lo back spondalytis L6 only supposed to have 5 of them......

lasted about 2 weeks and so one AM, off to the hospital instead of formation, bunks had no springs, being left over from WW2, and so that was all it took.....plus other stuff of course......

Still think I could have done AF or Navy without much issues, except for the same phys-ed crap the Army did......

a decent FLAT bunk, and a bit less on the gung-ho training, and I could have been fixing electronic gear, same thing as civilain TV sets I went back to....

P&D crews did most all of the heave lifting in the TV trade.....I was an inside final answer head repair tech for almost 20 years.....

My dad born in 1927 was destined for Korea. After basic, he went on to some infantry training. After completion, it was show time. The day of shipping out, him and some others were in the back of a deuce 1/2 when it rolled sending them all flying out.

Dad had a broken leg and that was the extent of his military career. He was discharged as Honorable which was good and got a disability rating along with it.

Probably saved his life.

The most fun part were actual exercises. We got to fly in military choppers, ride in tanks etc. The initial boot camp was tough but after that, most of it was fun. I was also stationed on the Austria/Hungary border to pick up illegal immigrants for 2 months. Got to use night vision and other goodies to track illegals. We mostly picked up Romanian immigrants who went through Hungary to get to Austria. Mostly economical refugees. We hauled them in a truck to the refugee camp where they were processed.. Many of them were sent back. The fall of the iron curtain caused lots of illegal migration.
